The First 40 Days - Postpartum Doula

While you're holding your baby, who is holding you?

In our recent history, society has forgotten the importance of respecting the first 40 days. We grow our baby, birth our baby and then expected to bounce back to our pre-baby selves, with little (to no) support or initiation.  While many countries and cultures around the globe continue to honour this time of great significance and as a passionate, postnatal doula, I would like to introduce clients to this precious period.

Becoming a parent for the first time, or welcoming a baby for the sixth time, is a huge moment in a your life and you deserve to feel special, supported and like the goddess you are. Time of rest, recovery, nourishment and being held should follow (known by several names including lying in, confinement period and the first 40 days).  The postpartum period greatly supports maternal mental wellbeing, while allowing our glorious bodies time to rest & recover.  This period also supports the establishment of breastfeeding/chestfeeding.

In the modern world we live in, 40 days of stillness, doing nothing and seeing no one is almost impossible to imagine, let alone execute – it’s absolutely ok to define your own length of confinement, that suits your unique family make-up.  Aiming for 10 days as a minimum is a good place to start.  However long you decide to spend in confinement, enjoy this precious time you get for yourself and with your newborn baby.

As your postnatal doula, we will have an opportunity to meet before your baby arrives (in person or virtually – you decide), and we will develop a personalised postnatal plan that is shaped to fit your needs.

During our get together, you will have the space to share your visions of your postnatal recover, what it means for you and your hopes for this truly special period of transitioning into parenthood.  We can talk about anything you like – that time will be dedicated to you. I will be there to receive what you wish to share and impart the information I hold.
